Based on records, Serena was able to earn more than $34.7-million as prize money in her tennis career. This is considered to be the most money that any female athlete has made in the history of any sport. Although born at Saginaw, Michigan, Serena learned her basics in tennis on the public courts of Compton, California together with her older sister Venus.

Right-handed player, Serena started her professional tennis career in 1999. She was 17 years old then.

The said year was a good year for Serena as she won her first major singles title following her victory against then No. 1 Martina Hingis in the U.S. Open final.

In 2001, Serena played again in the U.S. Open final but her sister Venus in straight sets defeated her.

By the next year until 2003, she earned a “Serena Slam” after she got back on track and won four consecutive Grand Slam singles title: French Open (2002), Wimbledon (2002), U.S. Open (2002) and Australian Open (2003). Serena fought for the top spot on all of these four events against her sister Venus.

Because of the said feat, Serena is the fifth woman who simultaneously holds all four major titles trailing behind Maureen Conolly, Margaret Court, Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf. The said victory has also earned Serena the title of being the ninth woman in the history of the tennis industry to have achieved a Grand Slam.

From 2002 to 2003, Serena held the top spot in tennis in the women category for 57 consecutive weeks.

Serena earned another title in Wimbledon by 2003.

At the last quarter of 2009, Serena added a new title to her tennis career by winning for the second time the championship in Doha. It was in 2001 when she first won in the said event.

With this, Serena finished the 2009 season ranking No. 1. This was her second time to finish the season on the top spot. The first was in 2002.

By 2010, Serena earned her 12th and 13th Grand Slam singles title by winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon respectively.

At the Australian Open, Serena defeated Justine Henin in their championship match. The said feat made her the first woman in the Open Era to have won five titles in the Australian Open.

At Wimbledon, Serena overpowered Vera Zvonareva.

By 2011, Serena failed to play in the first half of the season after she suffered hematoma and pulmonary embolism, which is the complications she got when she went under the knife because of her cut in her right foot. The said injury, which she got after she stepped on a broken glass in one of the restaurants in Munich, earned her 18 stitches.

Serena got back on track and again played tennis by June of the said year where she made an 18-1 record in the U.S. Open Series, which was held in Stanford and in Toronto.

After that major event, Serena did not play another WTA game in the same year.
