Maria SharapovaHaving to start hitting tennis balls at the age of four have paid well for the Rusian professional top tennis player Maria Sharapova. The already 24-year-old six-footer tennister has been dubbed as one of the best and most popular female athletes in tennis and had been named as the world’s most highest-paid woman in the sports industry.

Although born in April 19, 1987 at Siberian, Russia, Sharapova started playing tennis at the age of four at Sochi Russia where she was raised. At the age of seven or in 1994, however, Sharapova together with her father Yuri transferred and relocated to Florida to pursue a career in tennis. Upon her transfer, Sharapova enrolled herself and trained with Nick Bollettieri’s Tennis Academy. Bollettieri is a famous American tennis coach who has been credited to develop many world-class tennis champions.

Ten years later or in 2004, Sharapova alongside with her coach Thomas Hogstedt tried her luck in professional tennis by joining the Wimbledon. It proved to be a good year for her as she was able to reach the championship game and successfully defeated then two-time Wimbledon defending champion Serena Williams. The Wimbledon was Sharapova’s first major.

By 2005, Sharapova earned the No. 1 ranking in women’s tennis for the first time after she reached the quarterfinals of the French Open and the semi-finals of other three slams. Sharapova was on the top spot for seven weeks.

By the next year, Sharapova garnered her second major title after her victory at the U.S. Open where she defeated Justine Henin.

In 2007, the right-handed Russian tennis player continued to hold the No. 1 ranking despite being defeated by Serena Williams in the Australian Open. That season, she was on the top spot for a total of 10 weeks.

Sharapova successfully defended her title at the Australian Open in 2008 after she defeated Ana Ivanovic, earning then her third major title in women’s tennis. During that time, Sharapova held the No. 1 spot for three weeks. It was only short considering that she was not able to finish the 2008 season after incurring an injury to her right shoulder. Sharapova maintained a low profile then and went under the knife through an arthroscopic surgery in October of the said year.

Sharapova got back on track in 2009 and joined the French Open where she reached the quarterfinals.

Two years later or in 2011, Sharapova had her best season after winning the professional tennis competition in Rome and Cincinnati. In the same year, Sharapova reached the semi-finals of the Roland Garros and became a runner-up in Wimbledon.

For all her wins, Sharapova earned millions in tennis career prize. In 2010 alone, she earned at least $25-million. Considered already a tennis star for having won in different major tennis events, Sharapova signed a $70-million,eight year deal with Nike in January of 2010, the most lucrative endorsement deal for a female athlete in the sports industry.

This prompted Forbes to name her as the world’s most highest-paid female athlete.

Aside from playing tennis, Sharapova takes fancy at fashion and design among others.

At present, Sharapova is engaged to professional basketball player Sasha Vujacic.
